Habits – What are they ? Why are they so important ?

What are Habits?

Many of us grow up from babies to adults developing “Habits” unconsciously. Examples of habits can be as simple as brushing your teeth, potty training or tying your shoe lace. Habits don’t have to be always the hard ones to keep, such as going to the gym twice a week, waking up at 5 AM, or quitting to smoke cigarettes.

How many times did you wet the bed before you were fully potty trained? How many times did you attempt to brush your teeth without eating the toothpaste or tying that knot of your lace before you aced it? Well, if not for the lovely coaching and assistance of parents, family and teachers along with quite a bit of repetition, these activities would not have become habits now. Similarly,  think of new habits as simple tasks such as tying your shoe lace. All it needs is bit of coaching and sufficient repetition to become part of your daily activity.

Why are “Habits” so important?

Lets take the example of brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth helps to prevent cavities, tooth decay or a foul smelling mouth.  Well, you would wish all habits were as simple as brushing your teeth, right?

Sure, agree that certain habits such as smoking cigarettes or screen time on phone are habits that started off as a relaxing activity have now become an addiction, hard to stop. Hence it becomes all the more important to get rid of them from your life. Remember, habits identify you, so it is important you keep track of your habits. Over time, we tend to collect habits that eat our time unconsciously and make us less productive, healthy or happy.

So, it is time we start to practice the good habits, shed off the bad ones and develop some new positive ones that are new age and bring happiness, health and positivity into our lives.
